Katherine Gorge

Nitmiluk is the Aboriginal name for Katherine Gorge and gets its name from the cicadas.

We chose to go on a 2 hour cruise, which leaves from this very modern air conditioned outpost on the Katherine River.

Walking to the boat ramp you are confronted by a bat colony in the forest of gum trees. Thousands of them and very noisey.

Down the Katherine River towards the Gorge.

There are 13 gorges in the series.

Jim Jim- the water pandanus along the shore line.

The rocky cliffs of the escarpment as you enter the gorge.

Cabbage palms grow where they can find a bit of soil amongst all the rock.

As the boat continues down the river, the Nitmiluk speaks for itself….

Aboriginal paintings very high up on the rock. No one seems to know how they got there.

Canoeists travel up the river, which is safe as there are no salt water crocs.

This would seem an ideal way to spend a whole day exploring the series of gorges.

But even in the big sky country time is the enemy.
