Chopper over Nitmiluk.

As we found with Kakadu, there is no better way to see the territory than from the air.

We take off from Nitmiluk “airport”.

Heading out over the gorge, you can see the plumes of bushfires in the distance.

Down below us the boats of the tour operators can be seen in the gorge.

Even from the air, the formidable cliff faces can be appreciated.

It is easy to appreciate the crevices in the rock that have been cut by the water and run towards the gorge.

Here the water collects in a pool before it enters the gorge.

A Buffalo grazing in a creek looks up at the chopper.

As the waters recede from the wet season, billabongs are created like this one to the right of the gorge.

Parallel crevices in the rock , some containing water and the others filled with trees.

Water running off the escarpment cascades into the gorge system.

As we come into land, the boat shed for the tour operators visible on the riverbank, the entrance to Nitmiluk beyond.
