Not sure of the etymology or origins of the phrase “𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂” except that it came into popular culture and usage some time in the last 20 years or so.
In a way it’s a sideways version of the 1960’s phrase, “𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴” or as Fleetwood Mac expressed on their 1976, Rumours album, “𝗚𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘆”
But somethings changed. Dramatically. Now we have this shrill demand coming from the left and the transgender groups that we join them down their rabbit hole and celebrate their delusions, affirm their identity and use their correct pronouns which fly in the face of truth and reality.
Not to play along and point out that boys and men are boys and men and girls and women are girls and women is regarded as hate speech and anti trans rhetoric when the truth is that its not anti trans rhetoric so much as pro reality rhetoric. .
. In other words, just as in 1984, they’re demanding that we not only acknowledge that 2 +2 = 5, and that they are the opposite of their biological selves, but by doing so, you must therefore suspend our own beliefs about what’s upside down, right side up, and what’s right and wrong.
In short, they’re about controlling how you think, what you think and by extension, from your thoughts, how you express yourself and see the world
They insist we pretend along with them. That’s ok for a mother to agree that her child is Batman for a few hours of playtime after school or in the schoolyard perhaps but this is the real world of grownups where truth and reality matter.
Truth and reality are the glue that keeps society and civilisation from falling apart.
It was in this militant context that we are left wondering, whatever happened to the idea of going your own way, doing you own thing or, you doing you.
What they’re effectively doing is turning all that on its head.
In an exercise in narcissism, “𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂” has become a demand that 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗗𝗢 𝗠𝗘…..or else.
