Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said Mr Burke was “totally out of line” with his comments.

In its letters to Mr Netanyahu and Mr Albanese, the council said Mr Burke’s comments were “incendiary and irresponsible”, while Mr Netanyahu’s comments calling Mr Albanese “weak” could worsen social cohesion in Australia.

“These comments have played straight into the hands of opponents of Israel and anti-Semites, to the detriment of the Australian Jewish community,” it said.

But they were lauded by local pro-Palestinian activists.
