In the days after October 7 and the slaughter of 1200 Israelis by Hamas, various politicians and ordinary people picked a side.

The British journalist, Douglas Murray at the time made the observation that “𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬”

It’s quite surprising the number of people who you thought would know better and possessed a sense of history, decency, and facts sided with Hamas.

That is, they were on the side of the slaughterers and kidnappers. But as it says in the Desiderata: “𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲”

Social media has had the same effect. It too is like a flare on the battlefield. You get to see where everyone stands.

Donald Trump is another “flare on the battlefield’ where you get to see where everyone stands and that ignites, excites and triggers some rather unhinged passions.

It’s almost Biblical and equivalent to the events of the sixth plague with boils and pustules breaking out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 9:9)

It’s redolent also of the saying 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐝, in Latin as Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat (literally: Those whom God wishes to destroy, 𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧)

You just don’t realise that people you thought were normal, reasonably intelligent and decent, had commonsense and across the issues, were so low info, ignorant, stupid.

Tough but fair….
